North Lake Tahoe is one of the most concentrated ski regions in the country. Within a 30-minute drive from our front door in Tahoe Donner, you can reach four distinctly different resorts—each with its own personality, terrain, and crowd. Whether you're teaching a three-year-old to pizza, charging steep chutes with your crew, or just looking for a relaxing day on groomers with a craft beer at the base, there's a mountain here that fits.
And with the 2025–26 season delivering near-record snowfall across the Sierra—some resorts reporting over 500 inches and counting—conditions this year are about as good as it gets. Here's our honest, locals-informed breakdown of each resort to help you make the most of your time on the mountain.

Palisades Tahoe
Formerly Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, Palisades Tahoe is the flagship of North Lake Tahoe skiing—and a strong argument for one of the best ski areas in North America. The two mountains are now connected by a base-to-base gondola, giving you seamless access to 6,000 acres of terrain in a single day. That's an enormous amount of skiing.
The Olympic Valley side is where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held, and it still has that larger-than-life energy. KT-22—affectionately called "The Mothership"—delivers 2,000 vertical feet of steeps, chutes, cliffs, and moguls that advanced skiers dream about. Meanwhile, Alpine Meadows tends to be quieter and more laid-back, with excellent tree skiing and fewer crowds.
For intermediates, the terrain off the Emigrant and Shirley Lake lifts is beautifully groomed and scenic. For beginners, the High Camp area at the top of the aerial tram offers gentle slopes with jaw-dropping panoramic views. And if you're on an Ikon Pass, Palisades is included—making it an incredible value for pass holders.
Northstar California
Northstar is the most polished ski experience in the region. The pedestrian-only Village at the base is genuinely charming, with an outdoor ice rink, upscale shops, and refined dining that make the non-skiing hours feel just as good as the runs themselves. If anyone in your group prefers hot chocolate and window shopping over moguls, they'll be perfectly happy here.
On the mountain, Northstar is an intermediate skier's paradise. About 60% of the terrain is blue runs, and the grooming is consistently excellent. The runs off Vista Express and Comstock Express offer sweeping Lake Tahoe views that make you want to stop and take it all in. For advanced skiers, the Backside has steeper, more challenging terrain—but Northstar isn't the place to come hunting for extreme lines.
Where Northstar truly shines is its terrain parks. Consistently rated among the top 10 in North America, the resort has seven parks across 55 acres, from tiny progression features for kids to pro-level jumps and rails. If you have a teenager, they're going to want to spend the day here.
Northstar is an Epic Pass resort, so Vail pass holders get unlimited access.
Sugar Bowl Resort
Sugar Bowl is the mountain that locals don't always want visitors to know about. Perched on Donner Summit at 8,383 feet, it averages more snow than any other resort in the Tahoe region—500 inches per year. When other mountains are reporting good conditions, Sugar Bowl is usually reporting great conditions.
Founded in 1939, it's the oldest ski resort in California and still independently owned. You can feel the history in its Bavarian-inspired lodge and the general lack of corporate polish—and that's entirely the point. It feels like a mountain, not a brand.
The terrain is well-balanced across four peaks: 15% beginner, 41% intermediate, 31% advanced, and 12% expert. The runs off Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Disney are genuinely challenging, while the front-side groomers are wide, scenic, and perfect for confident intermediates. Sugar Bowl is also in the middle of a massive $100 million multi-year revitalization—this season brought expanded terrain and upgraded amenities, and a new eight-person gondola is coming in 2026.
Tahoe Donner Downhill
Tahoe Donner Downhill is five minutes from Alderhaus Retreat, and this season it unveiled something special: a brand-new ski lodge that replaced the original 1971 structure after 18 months of construction. The new lodge opened in December 2025—slightly ahead of schedule and under budget—and it's a genuine transformation.
The facility features level access to ski lifts (no more trudging up stairs in ski boots), an expanded sun deck with heated pavers, indoor bar and dining areas with mountain views, and RFID express ticket kiosks for pre-purchased passes. For families, there's a dedicated children's ski school area with its own dining space, restrooms, storage cubbies, and lesson infrastructure. It's thoughtfully designed from the ground up.
The skiing itself is perfectly suited for beginners and intermediates—40% novice and 60% intermediate terrain across 14 runs and three terrain parks. The vibe is welcoming and unhurried, with friendly staff and affordable pricing that make it an ideal place to introduce kids (as young as 3) to skiing or for adults to take their first lesson. And because it's so close, you can easily do a half-day here and still have the afternoon free for other adventures.
As a Tahoe Donner property, Alderhaus Retreat guests can take advantage of community access to the resort using the guest passes we provide.
